At the June 20 celebration of World Refugee Day 2008, two graduating
high school seniors were named as winners of the 2008 Nur Hussen
Scholarships. Those chosen were Salma Barkhadle and Mubarak
Abdi.
Salma is a recent graduate from Northland High School. In her
scholarship essay, Salma wrote about her recognition of the difficulty
her parents have had in leaving Somalia and relocating to the United
States. She was inspired by their hard work and faith in God, and sees
the opportunity of college as “the opportunity for a better life.” Salma
will attend The Ohio State University, and intends to become a teacher
so she can “inspire students to forge ahead,” as her teachers have
inspired her.
Mubarak , a former refugee from Somalia, impressed the selection
committee with his strong determination to peacefully end violence,
especially the violence in his home country. The non-violent actions of
Mahatma Gandhi, “as well as his welcoming approach to diversity and
recognition of the value of freedom” are the core of Mubarak’s
inspiration. He will attend the Univerisity of Miami of Ohio, and intends
to use his education to improve the lives of those around him, namely
Somalis who are divided by tribal lines.
